HBO backs Ladies' Detective Agency

Even before the pilot has been screened, American broadcaster HBO has ordered a 13-part series of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, based on Alexander McCall Smith's best-selling books.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has secured US and Canadian rights for the drama, while the BBC has rights for the UK. The third major partner is the Weinstein Company, which retains rights for the rest of the world.

The script for the pilot, due to be shown in the UK later this month, was written by Anthony Minghella (who also directed) and Richard Curtis. The series will start filming this summer.

This collaboration between the BBC and HBO is the latest in a successful line of high profile dramas that has included The Gathering Storm, Rome, Five Days and Stuart: A Life Backwards.
