Rates for writers rise as inflation and cuts bite

The Guild has agreed a 4.1 per cent cost-of-living increase in minimum rates paid to playwrights under the minimum terms agreement with the Theatrical Management Association.

The deal, taking effect from 1 December last year, brings the standard minimum writing fee for a play in most TMA-affiliated theatres to £8,470. Read the full details of the new rates (pdf).

Writers’ Guild General Secretary Bernie Corbett said: 'Although this increase has been delayed for six months, we are pleased that it reflects the rise in the cost of living in a time when inflation and spending cuts are affecting writers and theatres alike. We have also agreed that we will review the minimum rates again on the usual date, 1 June 2011.'

Meanwhile negotiators from the Guild and agents from the Personal Managers’ Association will meet the TMA next week to open talks on a full-scale review of all clauses of the TMA agreement, which covers terms and conditions for writers commissioned by most major premises-based theatre companies outside the West End of London.
