Full Membership entitles you to Guild publications, free contract vetting service, membership of the Guild’s pension scheme, credit arbitration (pdf), full voting rights and a name and credits listing on this website’s Find a Writer databaseWe endeavour to provide the best professional help we can for all our members, in the form of the invaluable advice of other members and staff and from specialist media lawyers when required.

A Full Member shall be any person who has accumulated 8 Membership Points. Membership points shall be allocated as follows, subject to the discretion of the Executive Council:

  • For each single piece of written work of any description for which reasonable payment has been received under written contract, in terms not less favourable than those existing in current minimum terms agreements negotiated by the Guild (where such agreements exist) - 8 points
  • For each single piece of marketed written work produced or published other than under the terms of the previous paragraph - 4 points
  • For each completed year of Candidate membership (up to four years) - 1 point.

Full members pay a subscription equal to 1.2 % of earnings from writing, subject to a minimum subscription of £180 and a maximum of £1,800. For example, a writer who earns less than £15,000 in a year from writing will pay £180 and a writer who earns £25,000 in a year will pay £300. Here's a table to help with your calculations.

Contract vetting
As a Full Member of the Guild you are entitled to our free vetting service contractual matters related to your writing.

Support and advice
Writing can be an isolated profession. As a Full Member of the Guild you will receive the full backing of a professionally run trade union including advice from our experienced office staff, fellow members and specialist media lawyers when required.

Pension scheme
Full Members are eligible to join the Guild’s pension scheme for TV, radio and film writers and to get pension contributions from employers including the BBC and ITV.

Find A Writer listing
All Full Members can register their name and credits on this website’s Find a Writer database.

Weekly e-bulletin
Every member of the Guild with email receives a weekly e-bulletin containing writing opportunities and news from the Guild office.

UK Writer magazine
Our magazine is free to members, with interviews, news, comment and feature articles about all aspects of professional writing.

Events
The Guild organises regular events for members. These are a chance to hear from established writers and other people in the industry and an opportunity to meet and socialise with other Guild members.

Cannes accreditation
Full Members of the Guild are entitled to accreditation at the Cannes Film Festival.

Discounts
Many theatres and cinemas offer discounts to Guild members.

WGAw joining fee waived
WGGB members who are eligible for membership of the Writers Guild of America, East do not have to pay the joining fee.
