Now that we have the technology for making work more easily available, and for consumers to pay easily, buy-outs should become a thing of the past.

These laws are in their early stages and it's exciting for the Guild to be in the forefront. The Guild's view is clear across the board in negotiations: when others profit by writers' work, the writers must too. Too many people get rich from us when we don't. A quick word on the comment that people "are more encouraged to steal the media." In what other context is being encouraged to steal a defence? Because you want jewellery/ a car/ money? Nobody is entitled to immediate gratification and to rob others. Let's not take piracy in any form lightly. It's still stealing from someone.

The pirate lobby? Cute name. The free speech attack comes from opportunistic legislation which would criminalise activities that have nothing to do with stealing media. There are plenty of non-pirates opposed to anti-piracy measures; the thing I hear most often from them is that they are also against piracy, but they want to see -sensible- laws put in place against it. Here is an example of sillyness: Linux users can't use Netflix, because film companies are convinced that Linux users are all pirates capable of great computational feats. So the good users, even those that know next to nothing about computers, don't have access to this great resource. They are more encouraged to steal the media, because the source everyone else can get easily has been cut off for them. I wish that the entertainment industry would just work with the people who are against anti-pirating laws. It would be better for everyone all around.
